Shaw Health & Safety Week (Formerly NAOSH week) - DAY 1
Welcome to Shaw Health & Safety week!!
Health & Safety week is held every year during the first full week of May to raise awareness about occupational safety & health to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. It is a week to rejuvenate our commitment to safety. North America Occupational Safety & Health (NAOSH) week was first launched in June 1997, marked by an agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States. Government, Industry and Labor groups formed a partnership to provide an opportunity for focus on Occupational Health & Safety. Recently, Canada has dropped the North America and now lead a Safety & Health week campaign (see pic below). We have decided to name this week: SHAW HEALTH & SAFETY WEEK!!!
In Canada, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and the Canadian Center for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS) still lead the promotion of Health & Safety week. Participation and involvement in Health & Safety Week has been shown to:
· Improve attitudes towards safety
· Increase understanding of the importance of occupational health & safety
· Foster a safety-minded culture
· Increase cooperation
· Raise awareness
· Assist in team building, and improve communication between employees, safety committees and safety professionals
This year, the safety team and JOHSC members have been planning activities in your workplace that promote an improved safety culture and ultimately work towards eliminating injuries. Activities will vary at Shaw Group locations, some include: Forklift rodeo (safe skills competition), AED learning, Health benefits of Honey, and other fun events and draws. We will also be distributing some safety items that helps keep you and your family healthy or even save a life.
Last week, we acknowledged and honored the employees who suffered workplace tragedies during the Day of Mourning, this week, Health & Safety week, it is time to look ahead, be proactive and think about your own reason to work safely and make a commitment to yourself and your family to work safely.
Throughout this week, a daily email communication will be sent out with interesting safety information, please read, and share these communications with your coworkers in a daily toolbox or with your family and use them as a catalyst to start and keep the conversation going about safety.
The celebration of The Shaw Group Health & Safety week shows the importance, devotion, and commitment to the Shaw Group’s Core Value of Safety. Please participate in the activities planned in your area for this week, have fun with your coworkers and make your personal commitment to work safely (both at work and at home) and keep each other safe over the coming year.
Thank you on behalf of the leadership, JOHSC teams and safety Team, I hope you have a safe, enjoyable Health & Safety week!!!
